Chiropractic as a Wellness Lifestyle: A Path to Holistic Health
At its core, chiropractic care revolves around the central nervous system, which controls and regulates almost every function in the human body. Chiropractors use manual or instrument assisted adjustments to correct misalignments in the spine, called subluxations, which can interfere with this communication and lead to various health problems. When Dr. Flaim and I identify an area of subluxation, what we are really identifying is an area where there is a neurologic deficit… a spot where the communication between the brain and the body is breaking down which can lead to a variety of dysfunctions. While many people seek chiropractic care for relief from back pain, headaches, and joint discomfort, its broader applications for health and wellness are gaining recognition.
Hydration Station
As we have heard our entire lives, water is important! Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is the traditional recommendation of daily water intake but getting at least half of your body weight in ounces is the minimum a human should be ingesting. For example, if someone weighs 150 pounds, the amount of water in ounces they should consume is 75 ounces. Not only is our body made of 80% water, but our organs, muscles, nervous system, and cells need water to stay alive and function. JUST drinking water… isn’t sufficient. The importance of adding electrolytes and salt in your water isn’t discussed enough.
What’s Thought Got to Do With it?
I have noticed that stress has been getting me down lately and I wanted to take time to reflect and share on a recent experience of mine. I was once told that if you are experiencing anxiety, it is because you are living in the future, and if you are experiencing depression, it is because you are stuck in the past. I usually have a great outlook on life, an uplifting mood, good emotional regulation, and control over my responses to stress. This is especially important at work and when interacting with people I care about. However, this week felt extremely difficult. I was irritable, dysregulated, anxious, and having intrusive and depressing thoughts; all of which resulted in me feeling paralyzed.
Allergies in the Air
Almost 10 million people in the U.S. suffer from allergies and they spend over $16,000 on OTC medication during their lifetime (1). No wonder we treat a large number of patients at the office specifically for allergy complaints! When we ask patients if they suffer from allergies, we like to specify what kind of allergy response they have.
Our Core Values
This month, I wanted to share the core values of the office. Our core values are the principles or guidelines that we follow that set the standard of commitment for everything we do here at Doctor Super’s House Of Health. These values allow us to create the accepting environment we work hard to provide for everyone in our community. I have used these core values in my own practice to help guide my professional growth as a doctor and a person.
Improving Immune Function
“We know that maintenance chiropractic care results in healthier patients; they have less severity and frequency of illness, they have less antibiotic and prescription medication use, and they have less hospitalizations and surgical procedures.”
Carbs: Simple or More Complex Than You Thought?
Even at a young age, I was told that I needed to stay away from carbs. This “knowledge” was obtained mainly through television commercials and magazines. However, it wasn’t until I started school at Palmer College of Chiropractic and took nutrition courses, that I really started to focus on my diet. I downloaded a fitness program app that helps track macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fats) to see what my body works better with: fats or carbs.
From Ember to Flaim: An Introduction to Dr. Flaim
Dr. Super introduced me to chiropractic and how interconnected chiropractic and mental health are with each other. It’s the perfect balance of physicality I was looking for with some focus on mental health as well. During the rest of that trip to Iowa, I knew this was going to change the course of my life.
The Sound of Silence
For years I have been attempting to improve my inner dialogue; the concept of language and the power of words to help, heal, hinder, hurt, humiliate and to humble us. How we talk about ourselves, how we talk to ourselves, and how we talk about others shapes our reality and our mind. Telling myself I am “bad”, “stupid”, “lazy”, “annoying” or “a failure” does not accelerate my personal growth or motivate me to make changes. It does the opposite. It stunts my growth and makes it harder for me to experience joy, peace, and healthy growth. So why am I still so nasty during internal dialogue? I would never talk to someone else the way I talk to myself.
